Contact Cedar Rapids Building Services with the property address and a description of the work. Explain whether you are creating an opening, enlarging one, replacing a window or changing a room’s use. Ask which application, plans and inspections apply.
Use the old egress handout as background
The City-hosted egress-window handout references the 2015 International Residential Code. Do not use it alone to select dimensions or conclude that a current project complies.
Check the current local rules
The official ordinance index lists Ordinance 005-26, adopted March 10, 2026, replacing Chapter 33. Confirm the code edition, local amendments and effective requirements that apply to your proposed work with Building Services. A model-code summary does not resolve local amendments or a particular property.
Get permit responsibility in writing
Ask who submits the application, supplies drawings, pays fees, schedules inspections and addresses corrections. Keep copies of the approved plans and final inspection records where applicable. Do not assume a submitted application means work is approved.

- Property address and intended room use.

- Questions about required plans, approvals and inspection timing.
